Many programs, like Magica Voxel, allow you to export objects as a series of 2D images. These images (slices) can then be drawn on top of each other with a vertical offset (sprite stacking) to achieve a  fake 3D look when the object is rotated.

Example of Sprite Stacking

While the performance impact of this method is normally negligible, projects with large objects, lots of slices, or many duplicate objects can potentially experience a slowdown, because without optimization, every slice is being rendered every frame.

This sprite stacking program allows you to import a strip image of a sliced object and then render it as a stacked sprite at various angles, allowing you to use composite images at run-time rather than drawing each slice manually.

In theory, this allows you to lessen processing overhead at the cost of (potentially) increased project size.
